Surf Fishing
Whiting are rewarding the surf fisherman this week with a steady bite and increasingly so are the pompano. Try fishing the
Redfish, black drum, sheepshead, croaker, trout, and stripers are biting in the Intracoastal Waterway this week. Anglers report that the bay is still producing larger sized trout than the intracoastal, but not as much action. Large, over-slot reds are still patrolling the bay from the canal to Palm Point. Sheepsheads are around near shore buoys and range markers. Several reports of nice trout being caught in the Indian Pass along the sandbars on live shrimp. Reports still have a lot of redfish activity along the miles at Indian Pass.
Inside state waters, anglers continue to enjoy a black sea bass and triggerfish bite. Also plenty of gray snapper and many large flounder caught this week near inshore reefs and structure.
No reports from further off shore this week.
There have been some pretty decent trips coming from offshore. Nice catches of Amberjack, Red grouper, Bee liners and Trigger fish. Sure you have to deal with releasing some Gags and Red snapper that you can not keep, but there are still decent fish out there for the taking. With the warmer temperatures we have been getting, it is not too hard to see why some folks have been loading up and aiming the boat towards the horizon. Take along several different rigs and types of bait so you can target all of the different species available to you. If you are going to invest the time and fuel, you might as well make the most of it. Smaller circle hooks and squid for the Bee liners and Triggers, and larger live baits or frozen Northern mackerel for the Red grouper and Amberjack. Don't forget the chum to stir things up a bit and always remember to bring along some jigs to tempt that reaction bite.

Believe it or not, there are still warm enough waters (seventy miles or so out) that are holding Wahoo, Dolphin, Black fin tuna and Kings. Getting reports of seventy two degrees water temps out there. In closer Amberjack, Bee liners, Red grouper, Trigger fish and Black sea bass are all getting caught. It has been a little difficult to find good live baits in the bay, but using squid over some natural bottom (like that around PCMI barge and the hover craft) will get squirrel fish if you don't mind investing the time. However cut bait like Bonita and Northern mackerel won't get turned down. Lets not forget to try jigging especially for Amberjack, they respond well to them and are pretty plentiful right now.
Still getting good Speckled trout reports from up around Deerpoint, in Sandy creek, Burnt mill and Crooked creeks. Backwaters are going to be where you will find both Trout and smaller Redfish right now. Smaller quantities lately on the bull reds in the pass area, but they can still be found. Black sea bass are being reported all over the bay system, not very big ones, but legal and delicious. We are still coming down off of the effects of a full moon, your afternoon bite will be better than the morning. Hearing more about Sheep head showing up both in the bridge channels, and of course the jetties.
Reported catches from both pier anglers and surf fishers include Sheep head, Redfish, Pompano, and Whiting. Add Bonita to that for the piers and you pretty much have the jist of what you can find out there right now. The days with clearer water conditions have been best. The days you have high surf, you should be prepared for very slow or no action.

Fishing for sea trout has been good all week. Many anglers are reporting catches from the Tapper Bridge, (intra-coastal canal) to the

Good reports from the Flounder grounds just offshore. The stages, Chickasaw, and Hovercraft are all producing but a little further away from the pass will probably be less picked over. There have been good reports of Red grouper, Bee liners Black sea bass and White snapper around your coral bottom spots. Amberjack and Trigger fish are plentiful over the bridge spans and big wrecks like Black Bart, Liberty ship and Grey Ghost. Plenty of Bonita still schooled up about a mile out, great bait and lots of fun on light tackle. Casting spoons Gotcha plugs bubble rigs and buck tails will all work just fine.
Speckled trout and smaller Redfish are being found in the back bays when the tide is up. On sunny days the fish seem to be attracted to skinny water over dark grass. The warmer water and grass attracts pinfish which in turn attracts predators. Larger canals and creeks are also holding fish. Mirrodines and Gulp shrimp work great but sometimes a live shrimp can't be beat. The Intra coastal waterway is a great place to get out of the wind and this has come in real handy lately. Fish the rocky areas, around fallen trees and stumps to find Reds, Sheep head and Trout. Hathaway and Tyndall bridges are good places to find White trout and Black sea bass. Squid and dead shrimp work fine on these guys (not too picky).
Not a lot to report from the piers this week, Bonita has been the main action. A few Redfish and every now and then a lone Pompano gets caught. To be fair though, there were not a lot of anglers working the piers due to the weather. Pretty much the same thing can be said for the surf. Maybe this week will be better, wouldn't it be nice if some good weather lined up with our holiday time off? Then maybe we can all get out there to try out our new toys from Santa!!
Lots of Sheepshead around the Destin Bridge on Live shrimp. Also around the bridge there are good numbers of Reds.
On the Jetties, there seems to be some Reds, a few Sheepshead and an occasional Black Snapper.
In the surf, mostly Whiting and a few Reds all being caught on shrimp.
In the bay, the Trout and Reds are pretty good on live shrimp around boat docks and bridges.
Bottom fishing in the gulf is producing flounder near shore on bull minnows. Triggers and mingo snapper are being caught on squid and amberjack near the edge on jigs and live pinfish.
PIER
King Mackerel- I have not heard of any Kings being caught this week. Most of the King Mackerel have started their migration to the south. With the water being this cold now it is highly unlikely any Kings will be caught until spring.
Spanish Mackerel- I have had reports of some very small fish being caught this week. Most fish have been caught on Gotcha plugs and spoons. Most of the Spanish have started their migration to the south. With the water being this cold it is highly unlikely any Spanish will be caught until spring.
Whiting- The Whiting bite has remained steady over the last week. Fresh peeled shrimp fished on the bottom will produce fish. A standard two hook bottom rig will produce fish. A better rig is a fish finder rig with a fluorocarbon leader and a #6 hook.
Pompano- There has been a few fish caught this week. The cooler weather has helped turn these fish on. Live sand fleas and fresh dead shrimp fished on the bottom will produce. Pompano jigs will also take them.
Bonito- The fishing has improved this week with some nice fish caught. It should improve as the water begins to cool down even further.

The Red grouper, Bee liner and Trigger fish bite has been good for those of us who have been able to pick the right day for a trip offshore. The King mackerel and Wahoo bite is pretty much non existent anywhere close to shore. Still plenty of Bonita schooled up just offshore. Amberjack are still co operating, although it seems to be a good idea to have some chum along to turn them on. They seem to be a little lethargic according to the reports. This is probably a result of the dropping water temperature. Plenty of Flounder stacked up on the wrecks and reefs anywhere out to say 100 foot depths. Divers report they are stacked four or more deep around the outer edges of any of the spots close to the pass and some further out. Drift the area with your choice of live bait or even a frozen cigar minnow down on the bottom, and in no time you should be trying to remember your favorite Flounder recipe.

Speckled trout and smaller Redfish are on the move towards the canals and bayous. Larger Redfish are still being reported in the channels especially on an outgoing tide. Most of the Flounder caught in the bay have been small but every now and then someone comes up with a 18-20 inch specimen. Black sea bass are feeding on anything from squid to live shrimp in the channels and around the marinas. Croakers and a few Sheep head are getting caught in the Intra coastal waterway. We have some nicer weather coming if you can believe the weather man, so pick yourself out a spot on the bank or drop the boat in. It sure beats watching TV!!
Not a whole lot going on at the piers this past week, Whiting and Pompano can be seen but they seem to have lockjaw. Same with the Bonita, maybe they just need some one to come down there and show them how it
